The incident took place in the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon around 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11, on Gramatan Avenue off East Devonia with vibrations, across the area, said Mount Vernon Fire Deputy Chief Jim Lang.

The department responded to the area after receiving numerous 911 calls of an explosion, Lang said.

When the department arrived on scene two more explosions occurred underground, he added.

The underground manholes that exploded were electrical, and likely blew from short circuits, Lang said.

Con Edison was called to the scene and are currently working to repair the problem.

The fire department remained on the scene to monitor area buildings for carbon monoxide.

Three buildings are without power at 625, 653, and 654 Gramatan Avenue, he added.

Currently, Mount Vernon police are advising motorists to avoid the areas of Fleetwood Avenue and Broad Street and also Gramatan Avenue from Devonia to Grand Street.
